Stalag Luft I Barth

Mary Smith and her sister's excellent memoir of their father Staff Sgt Dick Williams, and the research she has done on Stalag Luft I: has a useful bibliography on Barth.

A section on that site is still building room lists. As there are no records available, former SLI POWs are asked to check their diaries or log books for a list of those in their room and to send the names to Mary (with the Compound, Barracks and Room numbers for each, if known).  RAF SLI POWs are invited to help this project via the Barth website linked above.

The Stalag Luft I crest, for RAF kriegies at Barth, was re-created by Gordon Hemmings from a sketch he made at the time. He has so far been unable to trace the original draughtsman, whoever he was. Gordon takes issue with the view expressed of Oberst Scherer in Hub Zemke's book.

Mrs Helga Radau, the former Town Archivist of Barth, was instrumental in both organising reunions of former Stalag Luft I kriegies of all nationalities and in the setting up of the Memorial Stone.  She would like to hear from anyone who has connections with Stalag Luft I.

Together with Martin Albrecht she has written a book, in German, Stalag Luft I in Barth, Britische und amerikanische Kriegsgefangene in Pommern 1940 bis 1945 (Stalag Luft I Barth - British and American prisoners of war in Pomerania 1940-1945)
